Endogenous Peptides and Their Synthetic Analogs in Research
How many research peptides derive from naturally occurring molecules — mapping synthetic analogs and fragments like Semax, Selank, TB-500, and CJC-1295 to their parents.
A striking number of research peptides are not wholly novel molecules but synthetic versions, fragments, or analogs of things the body already makes. Understanding those relationships makes a catalogue easier to read. This note maps several common research peptides to their endogenous parents. All are supplied strictly for laboratory research use only and are not for human or veterinary use.
Fragments of larger molecules
Semax derives from a fragment of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone); TB-500 from an active region of thymosin beta-4; KPV from the C-terminal fragment of α-MSH. Each is a defined portion of a larger parent molecule.
Analogs of natural signalling molecules
Selank derives from the immune peptide tuftsin; CJC-1295 is an analogue of GHRH; Melanotan II is a synthetic analogue of α-MSH. Analogs are typically modified for a research-relevant property such as stability.
Naturally occurring molecules studied directly
Some are endogenous molecules examined in their own right: DSIP, a naturally occurring nonapeptide; NAD+, a coenzyme present in all cells; and GHK-Cu, a copper-binding tripeptide found in plasma.
Why the relationships matter
Knowing a peptide's parent orients you to the research domain it appears in and clarifies its naming (see Peptide nomenclature explained). The identity data — CAS number, sequence, batch — confirm which specific molecule a record refers to (see CAS numbers, batch IDs, and HPLC purity).
