Bacteriostatic Water: The Standard Reconstitution Solvent in Peptide Research
What bacteriostatic water is, why it is the common solvent for reconstituting lyophilised research peptides, and how it differs from sterile water.
Lyophilised research peptides are supplied as a dry powder and brought into solution only when a protocol requires it. The solvent most commonly used for that step in research settings is bacteriostatic water. This note explains what it is and why. What bacteriostatic water is
Bacteriostatic water is water containing a small proportion of benzyl alcohol (commonly around 0.9%), an agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria. The "bacteriostatic" name refers to that property: it suppresses bacterial proliferation rather than sterilising on contact.
Why it is used as a solvent
Because a reconstituted peptide solution may be sampled more than once over a period, a solvent that limits microbial growth helps keep a prepared research solution usable longer than plain sterile water would. That stability-over-time property is why it is a research standard for reconstitution.
Bacteriostatic versus sterile water
Sterile water contains no preservative — it is free of organisms at the point of filling but offers no ongoing protection once opened. The benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water provides that ongoing suppression. The choice between them is a handling decision for the research protocol.
