Peptides are short chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds — larger than a single amino acid, smaller than a protein. They are central to a great deal of biological research. This primer covers the basics for anyone sourcing research peptides. All compounds referenced are for laboratory research use only and not for human or veterinary use.

Amino acids, peptides, and proteins

Amino acids are the building blocks. A peptide is a short chain of them — often up to roughly fifty residues — while a protein is a longer, folded chain. The distinction is largely one of length and structure. Names often encode the count: a "pentadecapeptide" has fifteen residues, a "heptapeptide" seven, a "nonapeptide" nine.

Synthetic, fragment, and endogenous

How research peptides are described
